D e s c r i p t i o n o f t e s t s a n d d i a g n o s t i c s t a n d a r d Blood for BNP levels was taken using the Triage BNP test (Biosite Diagnostics, San Diego, CA, USA), a point-of-care method based on fluorescence immunoassay. The BNP measurements were done on frozen plasma approximately 1 to 2 months after blood collection. Doppler echocardiography was done within 60 minutes of enrollment using a Hewlett-Packard Sonos 1500 (Andover, MA, USA) machine with a 2.5MHz probe and included 2-dimensional and M-mode examination, pulsed Doppler analysis of mitral inflow, and continuous Doppler analysis of tricuspid regurgitation. 2 cardiologists and 1 pneumonologist, blinded to BNP assay and Doppler results, collaborated to determine the final diagnosis of CHF based on the Framingham criteria with corroborative information from other cardiac and pulmonary function tests.

Comparative value of Doppler echocardiography and B-type natriuretic peptide assay in the etiologic diagnosis of acute dyspnea.
OBJECTIVES We compared the accuracy of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) assay with Doppler echocardiography for the diagnosis of decompensated congestive left-heart failure (CHF) in patients with acute dyspnea. BACKGROUND Both BNP and Doppler echocardiography have been described as relevant diagnostic tests for heart failure. METHODS One hundred sixty-three consecutive patients with severe ...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-Pro BNP) and nitric oxide (NO) with echocardiography (gold standard test) in diagnosis of canine cardiomyopathy. Out of 374 cases, 82 cases showing cardiovascular abnormalities including 16 cases of cardiomyopathy were further selected for standardization of biomarkers. Significant (P

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and early diastolic transmitral velocity/tissue Doppler mitral annular velocity (E/Ea) both estimate left ventricular filling pressure, but have not been compared in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF). One hundred twenty-two hospital inpatients with suspected CHF underwent simultaneous clinical examination, BNP measurement, and comprehensive echo-Do...
متن کاملComparison of echocardiography and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide for monitoring the response to treatment in acute heart failure.
AIMS Comparison of the value of echocardiography and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in monitoring response to treatment in patients admitted for acute heart failure (HF). METHODS AND RESULTS Ninety-five consecutive patients admitted with acute HF underwent bedside Doppler echocardiography and BNP measurements on admission, after 24 h of intravenous treatment, and at day 7. We then studied t...
متن کاملUtility of a rapid B-natriuretic peptide assay in differentiating congestive heart failure from lung disease in patients presenting with dyspnea.
OBJECTIVES Since B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is secreted by the left ventricle (LV) in response to volume elevated LV pressure, we sought to assess whether a rapid assay for BNP levels could differentiate cardiac from pulmonary causes of dyspnea. BACKGROUND Differentiating congestive heart failure (CHF) from pulmonary causes of dyspnea is very important for patients presenting to the eme...
